Between the hills South of the river Po in Italy, lie the vineyards of the Oltrepò Pavese. A winegrowing area with a very long history ed anche ancient traditions that go back to 40 BC and Plinius.
Oltrepò Pavese is in Lombardy, in the north of Italy. In this area, over 13.000 acres are planted with vineyards, especially with local varieties like Barbera and Croatina but also international ones like Pinot Nero, Riesling and Moscato. Producers are often specialised in growing antique varieties and try to maintain traditional methods and techniques of producing wine that have distinguished the area for over 2000 years.
Thehills of Oltrepò Pavese have something in common: they are very fertile and therefore perfect for vineyards. The soils are mostly calcareous, with some clay in it as well.
One of the most important wines of the region is the Pinot Nero. It is one of the reds from Oltrepò with a great aging potential, which is perfect to serve with typical meat dishes and not only. The Pinot Nero Terrazze by Tenuta Mazzolino is like Oltrepò Pavese in a bottle. It is vinified in stainless steel for 6 months. It has a balanced acidity, aroma of red fruit, berries and pomegranate as well as some white pepper.
If we have a look at the white wines from the area, instead, Riesling is one of the most important varieties. The Riesling Campo della Fojada by Tenuta Travaglino has been chosen for our online wine boutique by Ines Giovanett: "It has a beautiful minerality and structure and is almost like a photography of the area." The Oltrepò Pavese Riesling DOC are usually light, fresh, white wines with a golden color.
